The German Football Association (DFB) has officially stated that it held positive discussions with Jürgen Klopp regarding his possible appointment as Germany’s new national team head coach.
Following a report by Sky Germany claiming that both sides had reached a preliminary agreement on a deal extending until 2030, the DFB issued a formal statement to clarify the situation.
“DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and DFB Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke had an initial, detailed conversation with Jürgen Klopp yesterday in New York about the potential appointment of Klopp as the head coach of the German national team,” the statement read.
“During these constructive discussions, both parties arrived at a mutual understanding concerning the key points of a possible contract.”
Klopp, currently employed by Red Bull as their Head of Global Soccer, remains under contract with the company. However, according to reports, arranging his release from this position is not anticipated to pose significant difficulties.
The DFB further added, “Negotiations will continue next week. Both parties are optimistic that the discussions will ultimately reach a successful conclusion, pending an agreement with Klopp’s current employer, Red Bull.”
The statement also clarified that any potential deal would require formal approval at a joint session of the Supervisory Board and the Shareholders’ Assembly of DFB GmbH & Co. KG.
The position of Germany’s head coach became vacant following Julian Nagelsmann’s resignation after the national team’s disappointing round of 32 elimination against Paraguay at the World Cup.
