Elaine Chao, the former US Transportation Secretary, has publicly commented for the first time since her husband, Senator Mitch McConnell, was admitted to the hospital on June 14. She clarified that her trip to China, which was planned in advance, did not necessitate her immediate return due to his medical condition. Chao arrived back in the US this week after visiting China on June 12 to engage in philanthropic activities with her family. Her absence during McConnell's hospitalization led to various speculations and unfounded conspiracy theories circulating online.
In a statement released via a spokesperson, Chao explained, "The secretary was on a long-planned trip in China to support her family's philanthropic endeavors. During the trip, she met with several individuals, including the US ambassador. The senator's health did not require an immediate return to the US." Chao, who held the position of Transportation Secretary during Donald Trump's first term and served as Labor Secretary under George W. Bush, has been married to McConnell for many years.
Following McConnell's hospitalization, the Chinese embassy in Washington shared a photo of Chao meeting with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng in Beijing. Reports indicate that Chao's staff did not confirm whether she had communicated with McConnell since her return to the US.
Senator McConnell, aged 84, has not made any public appearances or statements since his hospitalization for an undisclosed issue. His office has only mentioned that he is "continuing to improve" and remains involved with Senate and Kentucky matters during his recovery. The lack of detailed updates regarding the senator's health has led Democratic Governor Andy Beshear to formally request information about McConnell's condition and his capacity to continue serving. In a letter, Beshear expressed that Kentuckians are increasingly worried and stated that ongoing speculation is unfair to both the senator and the public.
Reports have suggested that emergency responders were called to McConnell's Washington residence after someone was found unconscious and seemingly in cardiac arrest, although his office has not confirmed or denied these claims. Meanwhile, Senate Republican leaders John Thune and John Barrasso, along with conservative commentator Scott Jennings, have mentioned that they recently spoke with McConnell, describing him as alert and engaged in Senate discussions.
Potential Consequences of McConnell's Departure
McConnell has already declared that he will not seek reelection, with his current Senate term set to conclude in January. However, should he pass away or resign before that time, Kentucky's updated Senate succession law would be tested for the first time. According to the law enacted in 2024, the governor is not permitted to appoint a temporary replacement. Instead, Governor Andy Beshear would need to call for a special election to fill the vacancy.
Kentucky law mandates a minimum of 56 days' notice before such an election can occur, and candidates must be nominated 49 days prior to the vote. However, the law does not clarify when the governor must announce the election, raising questions about how the process would unfold if a vacancy arises close to the November general election. If the seat were to become vacant, both Republicans and Democrats would nominate candidates for the special election, while independent candidates could qualify by collecting the necessary signatures. Since the law does not allow for an interim appointment, Kentucky could temporarily have only one sitting US senator until the special election concludes and the results are certified. Currently, Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate, meaning even a temporary vacancy could influence closely contested votes.
