Arsenal have completed the signing of Spanish international Ona Batlle on a free transfer from Barcelona, becoming their fourth new addition in just eight days. The defender joins Georgia Stanway, Geraldine Reuteler, and Selina Cerci in what has been a transformative summer window, which also saw long-serving players Beth Mead and Katie McCabe leave the club.
Speculation around Batlle’s move to north London had circulated for months, with reports first surfacing in January as the 27-year-old entered the final six months of her Barcelona contract. Journalist Maria Tikas reported that Chelsea and London City Lionesses had also shown interest, but Arsenal were the frontrunners and confirmed her arrival officially on Friday — coinciding with her 27th birthday.
Her transfer concludes a three-year stint at Barcelona, where she lifted 11 major trophies, including two UEFA Women’s Champions League titles. Having earlier represented Levante and Manchester United, Batlle now returns to England and the Women’s Super League, aiming to help Arsenal end their seven-year wait for a league championship.
According to Arseblog, Batlle has agreed to a four-year contract, with an option to extend for a further year.
Expressing her enthusiasm after joining the club, Batlle, who will wear the No.22 jersey, said: “I’m very happy and excited to get going. Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world, and I can’t wait to feel the joy of playing in front of our fans at Emirates Stadium alongside so many great players. I want to win trophies, and I feel this is the right place to achieve that.”
Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers shared her excitement, stating: “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to bring Ona to the club. She’s a hugely experienced full-back with strong attacking intent and great physical attributes. She’s a winner, and we want to go for more wins together.”
Clare Wheatley, Arsenal’s director of women’s football, added: “Ona’s record at both club and international levels speaks volumes. She’s a proven winner with a desire for more success. We’re thrilled to welcome one of the best defenders in the world to Arsenal, and I’m sure our supporters will make her feel at home immediately.”
Securing a player of Batlle’s calibre on a free transfer is a major achievement for the Gunners. A World Cup winner with Spain and a two-time European champion at Barcelona, Batlle is widely regarded as one of the top full-backs globally. She is equally adept at playing on either flank, often inverting from the left to create additional attacking threats.
With McCabe’s recent move to Chelsea, Batlle is expected to fill the void on the left side of defence. McCabe had been a key figure in that position throughout her 11-year tenure at Arsenal. With American defender Emily Fox firmly established on the right, Batlle’s arrival ensures balance and depth across the backline.
Her signing also strengthens Arsenal’s full-back options, which already include Sweden’s Smilla Holmberg and England’s Taylor Hinds, giving the squad significant defensive depth.
Batlle’s addition extends a strong start to Arsenal’s transfer window. The departures of McCabe, Mead, Victoria Pelova, Laia Codina, and Manuela Zinsberger made this a pivotal off-season for the club, whose only silverware last season was the inaugural FIFA Women’s Champions Cup. The club’s recruitment strategy this summer has been both ambitious and strategic.
Stanway arrives as one of the world’s leading midfielders and will help reduce the reliance on Kim Little and Mariona Caldentey in central areas, a balance further supported by Swiss international Geraldine Reuteler’s arrival. Up front, Cerci bolsters the attacking lineup, giving more tactical flexibility to Alessia Russo, who impressed last season in both advanced and deeper roles.
Reports also indicate that Arsenal are close to finalising a deal for 19-year-old RB Leipzig winger Lisa Baum, who would further strengthen the team’s offensive options. According to Arseblog, the agreement for the highly rated teenager, involving a transfer fee, is nearing completion.
