Mikel Merino has done it once more, coming off the bench to rescue Spain for the second consecutive match and send them into the semi-finals of the World Cup.

Spain took an early advantage in the first half when Fabian Ruiz slotted home from close range after Thibaut Courtois parried Dani Olmo’s effort straight into his path.

Belgium responded quickly, levelling the score just 11 minutes later through Charles De Ketelaere.

As the match appeared destined to finish level in regular time, Belgium conceded a goal strikingly similar to Spain’s opener. Pedri found Pau Cubarsi with a pass, and substitute goalkeeper Senne Lammens—who had replaced the injured Courtois—spilled the ball into the path of substitute Mikel Merino, who reacted quickest to tap in from close range.

The late goal gave Spain a dramatic lead in Los Angeles, with Merino once again proving to be Spain’s super substitute.

The midfielder is rapidly earning a reputation as Spain’s ultimate saviour in knockout football. His decisive strike against Belgium came just days after he delivered an almost identical late winner against Portugal in the Round of 16.

In that tightly contested encounter, Merino was introduced in the 85th minute and produced a composed 91st-minute finish from a Ferran Torres assist to secure a 1-0 victory—an effort that also marked the end of Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup journey.

This latest heroics add to Merino’s growing legacy of crucial tournament goals, following his unforgettable 119th-minute winner against Germany in the Euro 2024 quarter-final.

The 30-year-old’s exceptional form in the World Cup continues a remarkable run of performances since joining Arsenal from Real Sociedad in August 2024. He has been a vital part of Mikel Arteta’s squad, demonstrating his versatility across several midfield roles and playing a key role in guiding the Gunners to the 2025–26 Premier League title.
