Diya Bati Rules: Lighting a lamp in the home temple in the morning or evening is considered an important part of Sanatan tradition. Ghee or oil lamp is not only a medium of light but is also considered a symbol of reverence, positive energy and devotion to God. However, after the puja is over, many people have questions about the wick remaining in the lamp. Some people throw it with normal garbage, while according to religious beliefs it is advised to avoid doing so.
Why is the remaining wick of a lamp considered important?
According to religious beliefs, the wick used in puja has been offered to God. Therefore it is not seen as an ordinary thing. It is believed that the material used in puja should be immersed respectfully. For this reason, it is better to keep the remaining wick properly separated instead of throwing it directly in the dustbin.
What should be done with the remaining wick?
If a lamp is lit daily in your house, the remaining wicks can be collected in a clean and sacred place. Burying them from time to time in the soil of a Tulsi plant or any other sacred plant is considered a popular religious tradition. Keep in mind that the place where these are kept should not be frequented by people.
If a clean and religiously sacred river or reservoir is available near you and local rules allow it, then the collected wicks can also be immersed respectfully. At the same time, those who perform Havan or Agnihotra from time to time can also dedicate the remaining wicks in the fire of Havan.
Different traditions are considered for the wick of Akhand lamp.
The wick of an Akhand lamp lit during Navratri, Diwali or any special religious ritual is treated with more reverence than a normal wick. As per traditions, it is considered auspicious to immerse it respectfully after the rituals are completed. Instead of leaving it here and there in the house, it is kept in a safe place and immersed religiously at the appropriate time.
There is also a message of respect for puja material (Diya Bati Rules)
The basic objective of religious traditions is not only to follow the rules but also to maintain a sense of respect towards every object used in worship. Therefore, whether it is the remaining wick of the lamp, flowers or other worship material, it is considered better to dispose of them keeping in mind the reverence and cleanliness.
Note: This information is based on various religious beliefs and traditional beliefs. Its methods may vary in different regions and traditions. For any particular religious ritual, it would be appropriate to take guidance from your family guru, priest or experts.
