Manchester United have reportedly decided to step away from their pursuit of Ederson and are now concentrating their efforts on signing Joao Gomes, though Liverpool are also said to be interested in the midfielder.

The transfer saga surrounding Ederson’s potential move to United has taken several twists in recent hours, with conflicting reports emerging — some suggesting the deal has collapsed, while others claim it remains alive.

According to Italian outlet Sport Mediaset, the Red Devils have now shifted their attention towards Roma midfielder Manu Kone instead of Ederson. However, a new report from Globo indicates that United are now prioritising Brazilian midfielder Joao Gomes from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The report further adds that Liverpool have also made initial contact regarding the 25-year-old, which means United could face stiff competition in their bid to secure his services.

Gomes has been a standout performer for Wolves since joining the Premier League club, making him an appealing option for several top teams looking to strengthen their midfield this summer.

Football journalist Ben Jacobs has previously reported that Atletico Madrid had identified Gomes as a potential target. However, his latest update suggests that the proposed move to the Spanish side has unexpectedly stalled, despite an agreement between the two clubs being reached.

Atletico are reportedly exploring other targets, and Wolves are said to be proceeding on the assumption that the La Liga side have moved on, even though they have not been officially informed that the deal is off.

If Gomes’ transfer to Atletico Madrid is indeed off the table, both Manchester United and Liverpool could seize the opportunity to approach the player. For United, Gomes represents a solid alternative if their move for Ederson fails to materialise, while for Liverpool, bringing in a dynamic midfielder could help address the issues that saw them finish fifth in the Premier League last season.
