In a surprising development, multiple reports confirmed on Friday night that Manchester United have called off their €45 million transfer agreement for Atalanta’s midfielder Ederson.
The two clubs had reached an understanding in June, with United set to pay €40.5 million as a guaranteed amount and an additional €4.5 million in performance-related bonuses.
However, the finalisation of the deal was delayed as Ederson was representing Brazil in the 2026 World Cup.
When Brazil were knocked out of the tournament, Manchester United requested the player to undergo further intensive medical examinations before granting final approval.
According to sources including Sky Sport Italia and Fabrizio Romano, those medical evaluations were completed within the past two days, but Manchester United have now officially informed Atalanta that they are withdrawing from the proposed transfer.
Reports from Bergamo suggest that Atalanta are convinced the decision was not influenced by any medical concerns or injury issues. The club believes that United simply reconsidered their position and decided not to proceed.
Atalanta maintain that if Ederson had suffered any significant injury, he would not have been selected for Brazil’s World Cup squad in the first place.
The midfielder’s current contract with Atalanta runs until June 2028, and it remains uncertain whether he will be sold to another club or integrated into the squad under new head coach Maurizio Sarri.
