Kia has issued a safety alert to owners of over 4.62 lakh Telluride SUVs across the United States, urging them not to park their vehicles inside garages or close to homes, businesses, or other cars. The advisory follows recent recall filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which indicate that a faulty seat motor could pose a fire risk.
As per the records filed with the U.S. Department of Transportation under NHTSA ID Number 26V43, approximately 4,62,869 Kia Telluride units produced between January 2019 and May 2024 — covering the 2020 to 2024 model years — may be affected. Kia America estimates that only about 1 percent of these vehicles actually have the defect in question.
According to the NHTSA documentation, a strong impact to the side cover or slide knob of the front power seat can cause the seat switch to dislodge, become misaligned internally, or sustain damage. This could result in the motor running continuously, potentially overheating and leading to a fire. As noted in the recall report, such a fire significantly increases the risk of injury.
To address the issue, Kia will notify all affected owners via first-class mail around mid-August. Owners will be instructed to visit their nearest Kia dealership, where technicians will fit an electronic fuse assembly designed to prevent the power seat motor from running nonstop. Until the repair is completed, Kia advises all owners of potentially impacted vehicles to park their Tellurides outdoors, away from any buildings or other automobiles.
If this situation sounds familiar, that’s because Kia encountered the same problem earlier. The automaker had already issued a recall for the identical issue and the same group of vehicles — right down to the recall numbers — in June 2024. Even if owners had their SUVs serviced under that earlier campaign (recall number 24V407), Kia warns that they should not disregard this new recall, as some vehicles may not have been properly repaired. Additionally, the company recently recalled a limited number of 2027 model year Tellurides in March due to similar seat-related concerns, following a power seat-related stop-sale order for the Hyundai Palisade after a tragic incident involving a two-year-old child.
