Vigilance raid on retired ARTO’s house in UP: 13KG gold, 9 kg silver and Rs 1.62 crore cash found

Lucknow, 9 July. Taking major action in the case of disproportionate assets in Uttar Pradesh, Vigilance raided the residence of retired Assistant Divisional Transport Officer (ARTO) Lalit Kumar in Lucknow for about 26 hours. During this, the team recovered huge quantities of gold, silver, diamond jewellery, crores of rupees in cash and documents to many immovable properties. As per preliminary assessment, the total value of seized assets is around Rs 35 crore.

During the raid, the Vigilance team recovered about 13 kg of gold, 9 kg of silver and a large quantity of diamond jewelery from the house, the estimated value of which is said to be around Rs 20 crore. Apart from this, Rs 1.62 crore in cash was also found, which was kept hidden in the walls of the house, in packets and in different rooms. During the investigation, documents to 15 houses, flats and agricultural land were also recovered.

Investigation started after complaint of corruption

According to vigilance officials, the corruption complaint was filed against Lalit Kumar when he was working as Divisional Inspector (Provisional) in the Transport Department in Kanpur. After receiving the complaint, a detailed investigation into his income and assets was initiated with the permission of the Transport Commissioner.

Claim of expenditure 73.6 percent more than income

Investigation revealed that Lalit Kumar’s legitimate income was around Rs 93.26 lakh, while he spent around Rs 1.61 crore on purchase of movable and immovable properties and other items. According to the investigating agency, this is about 73.6 percent more than his declared income. Officials say that they could not give satisfactory answers regarding additional assets and expenses.

Action taken on court warrant

After retiring from Agra, Lalit Kumar was living in Chandralok Colony, Aliganj, Lucknow. Vigilance raided his residence after obtaining a search warrant from the court. During the search, cash, jewelery and other valuables kept hidden in many parts of the house were recovered. Now Vigilance is carrying out a detailed investigation into the source of the recovered assets and the entire matter and taking further legal action.
