An Indian Muslim man was stabbed several times at a shopping mall in the United States’ Utah because of his religion, The Salt Lake Tribune reported on Tuesday.
The assailant was arrested, Reuters quoted the police as saying. The suspect, Peter Michael Larsen, said that he “intends to kill Muslims”, the police added.
The incident occurred inside the Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City near Salt Lake City on Monday.
The Indian man, Syed Sohailuddin, is a kiosk worker at the mall.
The suspect had approached Sohailuddin and asked for his name and about his religion before indicating that he wanted a bottle of water, The Salt Lake Tribune quoted local imam Shuaib Din as saying. As the Indian man turned to get the bottle, the suspect began stabbing him, Din stated.
The suspect was caught by bystanders before police officers arrived at the spot. The victim was bleeding with 15 stabbing wounds and was taken to a hospital. He is in critical condition, the newspaper reported.
The arrested man constitutes “a substantial danger to the public if released based on his violent actions...ideologies and pre-planned mass casualty events”, Reuters quoted the police as having told a court..
The Indian Consulate General in San Francisco said that it was in contact with the family and friends of the man and will provide assistance....
