The hundred 2026: The England Cricket Board (ECB) has had to take a big decision for the 2026 season of its 100-ball cricket league 'The Hundred'. There are only 12 days left for the tournament to start, but despite this, three out of eight teams have so far failed to find sponsors for the main part of their jerseys. To avoid the commercial loss and bad branding of taking the field with a blank jersey, the board has approved giving place on the jersey to betting and gambling companies for this season.

England changed its rules under compulsion

The Hundred League was designed from the beginning to attract a new and young fan of cricket. The board has always presented it as a family-friendly tournament, which is why the ECB was strictly against associating betting companies with it. However, from this year the entire structure of the tournament has changed. The board has sold the stake of these eight teams to private investors only last year. Which includes the owners of IPL teams and the American consortium. Due to which now the responsibility of finding sponsorship and earning profit from it has completely fallen in the hands of the teams.

Recession had an impact on the sponsor market

At present the sponsorship market is going very slow in the UK sports world. Due to the economic condition of the country and global situation, companies have pulled back. Apart from this, after the ban on gambling advertising in the Football Premier League, the teams there are also getting hold of sponsors from other sectors. In such a situation, it was proving very difficult for The Hundred teams to find buyers, which forced them to turn to gambling companies.

ECB gave only 1 year relaxation

In view of all the controversies, The Hundred Board has found a middle path and has imposed strict conditions on betting advertisements. Only agreements for one year (2026) can be made with betting companies. There will be a complete ban on gambling advertisements in this tournament from the year 2027. Apart from this, teams can deal with gambling firms only when they have no other option left. Apart from this, if a player does not want to promote betting due to his personal or religious beliefs, he will have the full right to remove that logo from his jersey. Along with this, no player below 18 years of age will have this logo on his jersey.
