McLaren is currently developing its next hypercar, the 1258-hp W1, but that’s not the only high-performance, limited-production model coming from the performance-focused British automaker. The next in line is a special V-8 machine that builds upon—and surpasses—the acclaimed 750S. Known as the 788HS, this exclusive model is limited to just 200 units and represents what McLaren describes as the “definitive and final” evolution of the supercar lineage that began with the 720S.

As its name indicates, the McLaren 788HS produces 788 metric horsepower, equivalent to 777 imperial horsepower, from the brand’s familiar 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V-8 engine that powers several McLaren models. With a dry weight of just 2789 pounds, the car achieves an exceptional power-to-weight ratio of 279 hp per 1000 pounds, ensuring electrifying performance on the road or track.

Mechanical upgrades include lightweight centre-lock wheels, a front ride height lowered by two-tenths of an inch, and bespoke calibration for McLaren’s signature linked-hydraulic suspension setup. Generating 590 lb-ft of torque, the 788HS rockets from 0 to 60 mph in a claimed 2.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 205 mph, according to the company.

The “HS” badge stands for “High Sport,” a designation McLaren has previously used only twice. It does not denote any hybrid assistance. This decision to retain a purely combustion setup helps the car remain under 3000 pounds, reinforcing its lightweight philosophy and distinguishing it from the more complex W1 hypercar.

The roots of the McLaren 788HS trace back to the MP4-12C, the model that revived McLaren’s road car division in 2011. However, it is most directly evolved from the 720S, which debuted in 2017. That model, which won Road & Track’s Performance Car of the Year award in 2018, later gave rise to the hardcore 765LT before evolving into the 750S. Each of these models has earned outstanding reviews, suggesting that the 788HS will continue this tradition of excellence for those fortunate enough to secure one of the limited allocations.

Out of the 200 units planned, each McLaren 788HS will be individually tailored through McLaren Special Operations (MSO), the division responsible for bespoke specifications and unique commissions. Production will be evenly divided between coupe and convertible variants, meaning half of the cars will feature a retractable roof. As McLaren positions the 788HS as the ultimate and final development of the 720S lineage, it stands as the crowning representation of this celebrated generation of supercars.
