Rafael Marquez Named Mexico Head Coach Until 2030: Mexico Football Federation (FMF) has elected veteran player and former captain Rafael Marquez as the new head coach of the national football team. 47-year-old Marquez will hold the responsibility of this post till the year 2030. He replaces Javier Aguirre, who resigned from his post after the 2-3 defeat to England in the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

FMF said in its statement that the appointment of Rafael Marquez as head coach was already decided and this decision is part of a long plan. The federation said that their main objective is to build on the work done in the previous world cycle, further improve the team’s performance and make strong preparations for the upcoming international tournaments.

Rafael Marquez is counted among Mexico’s most successful football players. He played 148 matches for the country in his international career and captained the team in many major tournaments. Since July 2024, he has been working as an assistant coach with Javier Aguirre. Now for the first time he has been given the full responsibility of the national team.

Javier Aguirre left a strong legacy

This third tenure of Javier Aguirre, who has been the head coach of Mexico three times, lasted for about two years, during which Mexico won the Concacaf Gold Cup and Nations League title in 2025. Under his leadership, the team played 50 matches, winning 33, drawing 9 and losing only 8 matches. The FMF said Aguirre left a strong legacy for Mexican football.

Marquez was mentioned at the time of farewell

After the defeat to England, at the time of his farewell, Javier Aguirre had indicated in his statement that Rafael Marquez would be the next coach of the team.
