In many texts of Sanatan Dharma, stories to demons and gods have been told, after reading and listening to which one can learn many lessons of life. The story of killing Tarakasura described in Shiva Purana teaches us that being arrogant about one’s powers only leads to destruction. According to Shiva Purana, Tarakasura had performed rigorous penance to please Lord Brahma. Pleased with his penance, Lord Brahma gave him a boon. This boon later became the cause of his destruction because he became proud of his powers. To break this pride, Lord Shiva’s son Kartikeya killed him.

Lord Kartikeya is the son of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. With his bravery and powers he saved the gods from the terror of the demon Tarakasura. His birth is considered extremely necessary for the protection of Devlok. Now the question arises that due to which sins Tarakasura was killed. Also the question arises that why did Lord Kartikeya kill Tarakasura?

How did Tarakasur get the boon?

According to the story of Shiva Purana, Tarakasura considered himself a great devotee of Lord Brahma. He performed severe penance to please Lord Brahma. Pleased with his penance, Lord Brahma appeared before him and asked him to ask for a boon. Then Tarakasura asked for the boon of becoming immortal.

When Lord Brahma told that this was not possible, he said that his death should happen only at the hands of Lord Shiva’s son. Lord Brahma accepted his wish and gave him this boon. At that time Lord Shiva was not married to Mother Parvati. Therefore Tarakasura became confident that he would never be able to be killed.

A boon became the cause of destruction.

Tarakasura thought that Lord Shiva would never marry. He believed that neither Lord Shiva would get married nor would any son be born. Therefore he started considering himself immortal. He became proud of this boon and started committing atrocities. He started troubling the gods and took over the heavenly world. All the gods became sad due to his atrocities.

Troubled by the mischief of Tarakasura, all the gods reached Lord Brahma. After discussion, it was decided that Lord Shiva should be married to Mother Parvati, so that a son could be born to her and he could kill Tarakasura.

Lord Shiva got married

On the request of the gods, Lord Shiva married Mother Parvati. After marriage, Lord Kartikeya was born as the son of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. Lord Shiva made Kartikeya the protector of Mount Kailash. After this, there was a fierce battle between Lord Kartikeya and Tarakasura, in which Kartikeya killed Tarakasura and freed all the gods from his terror.
