WhatsApp is testing a new "Green Dot" feature for its users, making it easier than ever to determine whether a contact is currently online. Currently, this feature is available to select iPhone beta users and may be rolled out to a wider user base in the future.

According to reports, a green dot will appear beneath a user's profile photo when they are active on WhatsApp. The dot will automatically disappear as soon as they go offline. This eliminates the need to repeatedly open a chat just to check someone's online status.

For now, WhatsApp has limited this feature to the "Contact Info" screen; the green dot will only appear after navigating to a chat and tapping on the user's name or profile photo. It does not currently appear in the main chat list or the chat window itself. WhatsApp frequently tests new features on a limited scale first, releasing them to all users only after successful testing.

This feature is currently available to select users running WhatsApp Beta for iOS version 26.26.10.72. It had previously been spotted in the Android beta version as well.

Will it impact privacy?
WhatsApp states that the Green Dot will adhere to your existing privacy settings. If you have hidden your online status from specific individuals or everyone, those users will not see the Green Dot on your profile. In other words, the feature does not share new information but simply displays your current online status via a convenient visual indicator.

When will it be available to all users?
The feature is currently in the testing phase. If the trial proves successful, WhatsApp may roll it out to all Android and iPhone users in the coming months. However, the company has not yet announced an official launch date.
