Kylian Mbappe netted the only goal for France in their 1-0 triumph over Paraguay.
The French forward, regarded as one of the finest performers in World Cup history, has issued a composed and dignified response to deeply offensive comments made by a Paraguayan politician.
Mbappe’s decisive strike came via a penalty, sealing France’s progress to the quarter-finals where they are set to face Morocco. However, the aftermath of the match saw him responding to disparaging comments from a Paraguayan public figure.
Mbappe’s goal against Paraguay marked his 19th career World Cup strike, and he came close to adding a 20th but was denied by an incredible double save from opposing goalkeeper Orlando Gill.
Paraguayan senator Madame Celeste Amarilla published an offensive message about Mbappe on social media, using insulting language and questioning his identity as a Frenchman.
The politician’s statements included further offensive descriptions, prompting a strong reaction from the French captain.
Responding publicly, Mbappe said: “You are a despicable woman and unworthy of your position. You do not represent Paraguay.”
He continued, “Through your disgraceful remarks, the world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort of your national team.”
“You are an incompetent woman who gives the worst possible image of her country,” Mbappe added.
Concluding his statement, he said, “I will never allow people like her the freedom to spread their hatred across the world.”
The French Football Federation (FFF) condemned Amarilla’s comments, describing them as “utterly abhorrent and unacceptable,” and announced plans to take legal action against her.
“These remarks are criminal and reprehensible. They must be prosecuted here as elsewhere,” the FFF stated.
The organisation confirmed that the matter had been referred to the public prosecutor’s office with the intention of initiating legal proceedings.
Amarilla, a senator from Paraguay’s Liberal Radical Party, addressed the issue during a press conference earlier today, claiming she might also consider legal action against the FFF and warning the federation, “Don’t underestimate me.”
