If you travel long distances by train, this information is very useful for you. Suppose you need to travel from Delhi to Bihar but couldn't find a direct train. In this scenario, you book one train from Delhi to Lucknow and a second train from Lucknow to Bihar—essentially planning a journey with connecting trains. Now, imagine your first train gets significantly delayed for some reason, causing you to miss the second train. The first question that comes to mind is: is the ticket for the second train lost, or can you get a refund?
Most people are unaware of this specific railway rule, which often leads to them losing their ticket money. However, if you are aware of this rule and keep a few things in mind while booking, you can still get a refund even if a delay in the first train causes you to miss the second one.
**Crucial Step When Booking Tickets**
If your journey involves more than one train, make sure to select the 'Connecting Journey Booking' option when booking via IRCTC. Then, enter the PNR number of your first train. By doing this, the railways register both tickets as a single connecting journey. This specific setting is what ultimately helps you secure a refund.
**Will You Get a Refund If You Miss the Second Train?**
If you miss your second train because the first one was delayed, there is no need to panic. The railways have a policy for granting refunds in such cases. However, you must file a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) on time. If you file the TDR in accordance with the rules, you can get a refund for your ticket.
**What Must You Do to Get the Refund?**
Do not wait after missing the second train. It is mandatory to file the TDR within three hours of the first train's scheduled arrival at the station where the connection was to take place. If the TDR is filed after this deadline, the railways will not accept your refund claim, and you will not get your money back.
How to file a TDR on IRCTC to get a refund? (Online TDR Filing)
To do this, first log in to your account on the IRCTC website.
Next, go to 'My Account' and open 'My Transactions'.
Here, you will find the TDR option.
Select the PNR of the ticket for which you want a refund, specify the reason for the refund, provide the necessary details, and submit the TDR.
The Railways will then verify your claim, and if the conditions are met, the refund will be credited to your bank account.
Keep these points in mind as well:
This facility does not apply to every ticket. If the ticket for the second train was booked under the 'Tatkal' quota, a refund will not be granted under this rule. Additionally, there must be an appropriate time gap between the two trains, and the interval between the first train and the second (connecting) train should not exceed five days. Most importantly, you must have selected the 'Connecting Journey Booking' option while booking the ticket to avail the benefits of this rule.
If you are planning to travel via connecting trains, make sure to select this option when booking your tickets. Doing so ensures that even if you miss your second train due to a delay in the first one, your ticket money will not go to waste, and you may be eligible for a refund in accordance with Railway rules.
