Pep Guardiola has praised Lamine Yamal's remarkable composure under pressure, even as he acknowledged that the Barcelona teenager still has physical development ahead following an injury-hit season.
The former Barcelona manager shared his thoughts on the winger's progress as Spain gear up for a crucial World Cup quarterfinal clash against Portugal, offering a balanced view of caution and admiration.
Why Yamal Is Still Developing
Yamal's club season ended early in April due to a hamstring injury, which briefly threatened his World Cup participation. Spain opted for a cautious approach, carefully managing his minutes during the group stage.
He featured for just 20 minutes against Cape Verde, was substituted at halftime against Saudi Arabia, and played 76 minutes in the final group match against Uruguay. Even in Spain's Round of 32 win over Austria, where he was influential, the coaching staff withdrew him late to protect his fitness.
Discussing Yamal's condition, Guardiola admitted there is still work to be done physically.
"Lamine is a bit behind physically due to his injuries," Guardiola was quoted as saying by FCB World. "However, given his age, he has an incredible ability to handle pressure and can turn a match around on his own."
A Key Weapon for Spain
Despite fitness concerns, Guardiola believes Yamal possesses the mentality to shine on the biggest stages. Few players his age show such poise in high-pressure moments, and his tournament performances have reinforced his ability to influence games even when not at full fitness.
Looking ahead to Spain's quarterfinal with Portugal, Guardiola highlighted the importance of midfield control.
"If Rodri can set the tempo alongside Pedri, these two players, together with Lamine Yamal, have everything it takes to make the difference," he explained.
