Tehran: Early on Tuesday, July 7, an oil tanker experienced a fire after being struck by an "unknown projectile" while navigating off the coast of Oman in the Strait of Hormuz. This incident was confirmed by British military sources. According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Centre, the vessel was hit near Limah, Oman, as it was heading south out of the strait towards the Gulf of Oman. Fortunately, there have been no reports of environmental damage resulting from the incident, nor any immediate casualties. An investigation into the occurrence has been initiated.
US Accusations Against Iran US Blames Iran:
Reports indicate that Iranian forces launched at least two missiles targeting commercial ships traversing the Strait of Hormuz on the night prior, as cited by Axios from two US officials. These missile strikes occurred just three weeks after a memorandum of understanding was established between the United States and Iran aimed at reducing hostilities in the area. Under this agreement, Iran had committed to ceasing attacks in this crucial waterway. Additionally, a second vessel reportedly fell victim to an Iranian missile strike, according to a US official's claims reported by Axios. The Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for one-fifth of the world's oil before the onset of conflict on February 28, has been a contentious issue in US-Iran discussions. Iran has increased its control over the strait amid ongoing tensions. Axios also noted that the US may respond with military strikes against Iranian positions. Recently, a senior Iranian diplomat cautioned that the Strait of Hormuz should not serve as a stage for military displays by external powers. Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, emphasized on social media that Iran, along with Oman, is responsible for ensuring security in the strait.
