Portugal's head coach Roberto Martínez has stepped down from his position shortly after the national team's elimination from the World Cup. The announcement came during a press conference following Portugal's 0–1 defeat to Spain.
The Spaniard confirmed his decision by saying, "My era is over; now it is important to make a fresh start, and it is legitimate for the president to choose his own coach. I am grateful for all the support I received."
Martínez's contract was set to expire and will not be renewed. Reports indicate that Jorge Jesus is the leading candidate to succeed him as the next head coach of Portugal.
The news marks the end of an era for both Cristiano Ronaldo and Martínez, as the Portuguese star is also believed to have played his final international match for the national side.
