Following a hard-fought 1-0 win against Portugal in the Round of 16, Spain have achieved a remarkable milestone at the FIFA World Cup.
La Roja have become the first men’s team in World Cup history to record clean sheets in each of their first five matches in a single edition of the tournament.
The victory also saw goalkeeper Unai Simón extend his personal unbeaten streak, with the 29-year-old now having gone 609 minutes without conceding a goal in World Cup play — setting a new record for the competition.
Simón’s streak dates back to the 2022 World Cup, when Spain suffered a 2-1 defeat in their final group stage game against Japan.
Since then, the Spanish shot-stopper has been outstanding, pulling off numerous crucial saves, including several in the latest match to deny Cristiano Ronaldo and keep Portugal at bay.
After Spain’s attacking brilliance powered them to the EURO 2024 title, many are now wondering if Simón’s rock-solid performances between the posts could be the foundation that leads them to World Cup glory this summer.
