In the Mankhurd area of Mumbai, a four-story illegal building collapsed, resulting in the deaths of six individuals. Following this tragic event, a criminal case has been initiated, leading to the arrest of two suspects. This incident has raised serious concerns regarding unauthorized construction and civic oversight. The collapse occurred around 8:30 PM on Sunday night, behind the Hanuman Temple in Janata Nagar, amidst heavy rainfall. A section of 'Chal Number 5', which was three stories high in addition to the ground floor, suddenly fell. Initial reports indicate that two to three residential homes also collapsed, trapping several residents under the debris.
Criminal Investigation Post-Rescue Efforts
Emergency teams arrived promptly at the scene following the building's collapse. Personnel from the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), Mumbai Police, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and the 108 ambulance service conducted extensive rescue operations throughout the night. While many individuals were rescued, six lives were lost. In the aftermath, authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the building's construction. An FIR has been filed at the Mankhurd police station under sections 105 and 3(5) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Focus on Illegal Construction
According to police reports, the collapsed structure was an illegally constructed four-story building. FIRs have been filed against the building's owner, the contractor, the owner of the slum, and others responsible for the illegal construction. Investigators will examine whether the building violated construction regulations and if negligence contributed to the disaster. Notably, the list of accused includes private individuals and government officials who allegedly facilitated or enabled the illegal construction. Their roles are under scrutiny, and authorities are also investigating potential lapses in regulatory oversight and enforcement.
Arrests Made in Connection with the Collapse
Two individuals have been arrested in connection with this case. However, their identities and specific roles have not been officially disclosed yet. Investigators are expected to question additional suspects as they gather evidence related to the building's construction, approvals, and maintenance. This incident has once again highlighted the ongoing issue of illegal and structurally unsafe buildings in Mumbai, particularly in densely populated areas where unauthorized constructions continue despite existing regulations. Rescue and relief operations have concluded, while the police investigation into the collapse and the alleged involvement of those responsible is ongoing.
