USMNT forward Folarin Balogun’s one-match ban deferred after red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina, cleared to play against Belgium

USMNT striker Folarin Balogun’s one-match suspension has been postponed, meaning he will be available for the United States’ Round of 16 clash with Belgium on Monday night. The Monaco forward had initially been ruled out following a straight red card in the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, FIFA has intervened and deferred the suspension’s enforcement.

Suspension deferred

Balogun was originally set to miss Monday’s fixture after receiving a direct red card for a foul on Bosnia’s Tarik Muharemovic — an offence that normally carries a one-match suspension under FIFA’s disciplinary rules. The USMNT did not file an appeal, and Balogun stated that he had “accepted the decision.”

Nevertheless, FIFA later intervened and announced that the suspension would be held in abeyance for a period of one year.

The U.S. Soccer Federation confirmed the ruling in an official statement: “We accept the decision of the Disciplinary Committee and are pleased that Folarin Balogun is eligible to compete tomorrow. Our full attention is focused on the Round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle, and we look forward to the continued support of our amazing fans.”

FIFA’s explanation

In a detailed statement, FIFA outlined the reasoning behind its decision:

“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has imposed the following sanction on United States national team player Folarin Balogun, who was sent off as a result of a direct red card during the FIFA World Cup 2026 match between the United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina played on 1 July 2026 at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium: One-match suspension for breaches of articles 14 and 66 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC).”

“In accordance with article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year. If Folarin Balogun commits another infringement of a similar nature and severity during the probationary period, the suspension shall be activated and the sanction applied, without prejudice to any additional penalty arising from the new offence.”

FIFA had previously taken a similar stance before the tournament when it lifted a one-match suspension imposed on Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese star was due to miss his team’s opening fixture against DR Congo — the last match of a three-game suspension — but was eventually cleared to play.

However, a decision to suspend a ban in the middle of a World Cup campaign is virtually unprecedented.

White House involvement?

Reports suggest that U.S. President Donald Trump, known to have a friendly relationship with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, personally contacted Infantino to request a review of Balogun’s red card. FIFA, however, has denied that any political influence played a role in the decision.

Despite the denial, Trump posted on Truth Social shortly after the ruling was announced, writing: “Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

Balogun’s strong World Cup campaign

Balogun has been one of the standout performers for the United States during this World Cup, starting three of the team’s four matches and contributing either a goal or an assist in each appearance. He found the back of the net against Bosnia and Herzegovina before receiving his red card. The U.S. Soccer Federation initially chose not to contest the decision, as appeals are not permitted during tournament play, though FIFA retains the authority to extend a suspension if warranted.

Speaking after the match, Balogun reflected on the incident: “The most important thing for me is to set the right example for people watching,” he said. “I understand that the World Cup might be the first time many Americans are tuning in. So, it’s crucial to show that whatever happens — good or bad — you must stay true to yourself.”

A historic challenge ahead

The United States now face Belgium in what could be the most consequential match in the nation’s footballing history. A victory would send them into the quarterfinals and mark only their third-ever win in a World Cup knockout stage. Belgium secured their place in the Round of 16 after narrowly defeating Senegal with a late penalty.
