Celtic have officially announced that former Liverpool and Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has signed a new contract extension, committing his immediate future to the Scottish champions. The experienced English player, who joined the Hoops to strengthen their midfield, will continue at Parkhead for at least one more season as the club seeks to maintain its stronghold on Scottish football.
Experienced midfielder stays at Parkhead
The club has secured the services of Oxlade-Chamberlain for another year. The former England international, capped 35 times for his country, proved to be an important mid-season acquisition for the Hoops after a challenging stint in Turkey. His leadership and composure added depth to Celtic’s midfield unit.
The seasoned campaigner moved to Glasgow earlier this year after his contract with Besiktas was terminated, leaving him without a club for six months. Despite that hiatus, he quickly regained his rhythm and became a crowd favourite at Parkhead, contributing notably to Celtic’s late-season momentum under the management of Martin O’Neill.
Key role in Celtic’s Double triumph
Oxlade-Chamberlain made an instant impression by scoring a dramatic last-minute winner against Livingston on his debut, setting the tone for his tenure. Although seven of his 12 appearances came as a substitute, his maturity and experience proved crucial as Celtic overtook Hearts on the final day to retain their Scottish Premiership crown and also lifted the Scottish Cup.
Reflecting on his contract renewal, the midfielder expressed his happiness about continuing in Scotland. “I’m thrilled to remain at Celtic for another season. Last year was an incredible experience, and being part of the team that won both the league and Scottish Cup was truly special,” Oxlade-Chamberlain told the club’s official website. “I’m really looking forward to rejoining the lads and preparing for what I hope will be another great year.”
O’Neill’s confidence in Oxlade-Chamberlain
The extension highlights manager Martin O’Neill’s faith in the 30-year-old. The Northern Irish coach, who guided Celtic to a domestic double after taking charge on an interim basis, was recently confirmed as permanent manager. O’Neill, who led the side to victory in the Scottish Cup final, was eager to retain the former Premier League winner’s presence and leadership within the squad as preparations begin for the new campaign. The decision also ends speculation about Oxlade-Chamberlain’s future, particularly after his partner Perrie Edwards publicly supported staying longer in Glasgow.
Focus turns to pre-season
Although Celtic have not yet made any new signings in the current transfer window, securing Oxlade-Chamberlain’s signature represents a key move in their summer plans. The team will soon begin pre-season action, travelling to Ireland this weekend for their first friendly against Shelbourne on Tuesday, before heading to Portugal for an intensive training camp where Oxlade-Chamberlain will rejoin the squad.
