Canada vs Morocco, FIFA World Cup 2026, Round of 16: Morocco continued their dream run at the FIFA World Cup 2026 with an impressive 3-0 victory over Canada in the Round of 16 on Friday.
After surviving a difficult first half, the Atlas Lions stepped up after the break and scored three unanswered goals to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
Midfielder Azzedine Ounahi was the star of the night with a brilliant brace, while substitute Soufiane Rahimi completed the scoring in added time. Canada fought hard throughout the match but failed to convert their chances, bringing an end to their memorable World Cup campaign.
Canada make a strong start but miss key opportunities
Canada began the match with plenty of energy and looked the better side during the opening 45 minutes. The hosts controlled possession, attacked with confidence, and created a number of promising chances.
Tani Oluwaseyi came close to giving Canada the lead, while Stephen Eustaquio caused problems with dangerous deliveries from set-pieces. However, Morocco's defence stayed organised, and goalkeeper Yassine Bounou made important saves whenever he was called into action.
Morocco also suffered an early setback after striker Ismael Saibari had to leave the field because of an injury before halftime. Despite Canada's pressure, the first half ended without any goals.
Morocco find another gear after break
The second half belonged completely to Morocco. The breakthrough came just five minutes after the restart when Azzedine Ounahi finished off a clever free-kick routine to put his side ahead.
The goal changed the flow of the match. Canada pushed more players forward in search of an equaliser, but Morocco remained calm and looked dangerous on quick counter-attacks.
Ounahi doubled Morocco's advantage in the closing stages with another composed finish after a fast attacking move, leaving Canada with a mountain to climb.
Rahimi puts result beyond doubt
As Canada committed more players in attack, Morocco found even more space to exploit. Deep into stoppage time, substitute Soufiane Rahimi finished another swift counter-attack to make it 3-0 and seal a comfortable victory for the African side.
The final score reflected Morocco's clinical finishing, even though Canada had enjoyed several good moments earlier in the contest.
Canada's impressive World Cup journey ends
Canada may have been knocked out, but the tournament will still be remembered as a significant achievement for the co-hosts.
Reaching the knockout stage marked another important step in the country's football growth. Throughout the tournament, Canada played positive football and earned the respect of fans with their fearless approach.
Although they could not overcome Morocco, the experience gained at this World Cup will be valuable for the team's future.
Morocco march into another World Cup quarter-final
Morocco once again showed why they have become one of the toughest teams in international football. After knocking out the Netherlands in the previous round, they produced another disciplined and clinical performance to eliminate Canada.
The Atlas Lions will now take on France in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals as they continue their bid for another historic run on the world stage.
