Cape Verde may have bowed out of the World Cup after a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat to Argentina, but the small island nation left an unforgettable impression on the global football stage. Their spirited display against the reigning world champions in Miami drew extraordinary admiration from football icons Thierry Henry and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Football legends moved by a historic performance

Making their first-ever appearance at the World Cup, Cape Verde entered the round of 32 as major underdogs, ranked 66 places below Argentina, the world’s top-ranked team. Yet, their fearless style of play pushed the champions to the brink, forcing a tense extra-time conclusion that captivated fans worldwide. Among those deeply moved was legendary Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who was serving as a FOX Sports analyst during the match.

The former Sweden international was visibly emotional after the final whistle, saying, “I can stand there and give applause to Cape Verde because it was all about Cape Verde. Small island with big dreams, and they almost threw out the big giant. These guys, they’re heroes. This is heroes. They became idols of their small island, and they are stars. They didn’t lose any game during 90 minutes, important to say. They almost made it in this game.”

Ibrahimovic continued, “I almost have tears because of this moment, seeing these images. Argentina’s not even celebrating because this is not about Argentina or Leo Messi. This is about Cape Verde, and they almost did it.”

Henry hails the 'magical' minnows

Thierry Henry was equally glowing in his praise, applauding the belief and unity displayed by Cape Verde throughout the contest. The match was ultimately decided when a header deflected off Diney Borges’ arm into his own net during the second half of extra-time. “I don’t care what happened in the result right now, and I’m sure the Argentinians feel the same way because they didn’t even celebrate. They’re just happy to go through,” the Arsenal legend observed.

Henry added, “The story is, was and always will be Cabo Verde. What I witnessed today is just like – when you believe that you can, that’s what can happen. Yes, I know they ended up losing the game. But they won our heart. I have to say that it’s just magical. Wow.”

Messi laughs off the physical battle

While pundits were full of admiration, Lionel Messi was nursing the bruises of a fiercely contested match. The Argentina captain, who netted his 20th career World Cup goal during the game, was seen laughing and taking selfies with Cape Verde players following the final whistle, showing mutual respect despite the high-pressure knockout encounter.

Reflecting on the game, Messi joked that his opponents “kicked the crap” out of him before asking for his shirt. The Inter Miami star admitted Argentina found it tough to control the match, stating, “We knew it was going to be a very hard match. There's a reason this team hadn't lost to Spain and Uruguay.”

An inspiration to the world of football

Former Chelsea midfielder Mikel John Obi also joined in praising Cape Verde’s remarkable display. “What we have witnessed today is absolutely incredible,” he said.

Mikel concluded, “They are the winners today. Doesn’t matter what happened, these guys are the absolute winners today. Argentina dodged a massive bullet and live to fight another day.” With Argentina now preparing for a last-16 clash against Egypt, the ‘Blue Sharks’ return home as national heroes, having captured the hearts of fans across the world.
