Zlatan Ibrahimovic Questions Ronaldo's Role Ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup

Renowned football star Zlatan Ibrahimovic has expressed doubts about Portugal's chances in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup if they continue to depend on Cristiano Ronaldo, who is now 41 years old, as their main striker. Ibrahimovic believes that Ronaldo's physical abilities have diminished, and he no longer possesses the agility and finishing skills he once had. He suggested that Ronaldo's selection is more about his past achievements than his current form. 'Fans of Portugal should have anticipated this situation. Winning in 2026 with a 41-year-old Ronaldo at the forefront is unrealistic, especially with Ramos available on the bench, who has already made an impact by scoring,' Ibrahimovic stated.

'This isn't about legendary leadership; it's more about ego that is hindering the team. Ronaldo has lost his edge and speed. Now, he primarily stays in the box. His reputation is currently more beneficial than his physical capabilities. Persisting with him as a starter is simply a nostalgic folly,' he added.

Portugal's Thrilling Victory Against Croatia

Portugal, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, secured their spot in the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup after a thrilling 2-1 comeback against Croatia. This victory maintains Portugal's unbeaten record against Croatia in competitive matches and sets them up for a Round of 16 encounter with Spain.

As the match approached penalties, Portugal clinched the win in the 94th minute when Leão's cross found Ramos, who scored with a powerful header. In a dramatic twist during added time, Josko Gvardiol thought he had equalized, but after a lengthy VAR review, it was determined that Igor Matanovic was offside during the play, resulting in the goal being disallowed.

Ronaldo's equalizer, converted from the penalty spot, marked his first goal in the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup, achieved during his record-extending sixth tournament appearance.

Portugal's next challenge will be against Spain in the Round of 16 on July 7 at 12:30 AM local time.
