England have announced their 16-man squad for the three-match ODI series against India, with Gus Atkinson and Saqib Mahmood both recalled to the white-ball setup, while Sussex all-rounder James Coles earns his first call-up, having risen through the county ranks.
The three-match series follows the T20I encounter between the rivals, starting at Edgbaston on July 14 before moving to Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on July 16 and finishing at Lord’s on July 19. Brook will lead the side once again, while Root, Buttler, Archer, Rashid, and Sam Curran are among the other notable names retained in the squad.
James Coles earns maiden ODI call-up as England recall pace duo
The biggest talking point about England’s ODI squad announcement is the inclusion of 21-year-old James Coles, who is in contention to make his debut against India. The Sussex all-rounder has excelled domestically this season for both county and England Lions, and is tipped to be one of the game’s rising stars.
His omission from the 15-man T20I squad earlier this month means Coles has had to wait to add ODI cricket to his burgeoning international career, but it seems that England’s coaches have been sufficiently impressed by his performances to call upon him again.
Gus Atkinson has also been recalled to the ODI squad for the first time since his debut tour in early 2025, having spent the best part of the past year concentrating on Test cricket, while Saqib Mahmood has overcome injury problems to add to his growing list of achievements.
Mahmood has already featured in this month’s T20I series against India, and will bolster England’s pace bowling options for the ODI matches.
Otherwise, there is a core of white-ball specialists retained in the squad, including the excellent Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Ben Duckett and Will Jacks, while Josh Tongue retains his place despite yet to make an ODI appearance.
Rehan Ahmed, Liam Dawson and Adil Rashid are the three spin options in the squad.
