Ange Postecoglou returns to management as Al-Nassr head coach after World Cup punditry stint

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has officially made his comeback to football management after a nine-month hiatus.

The Australian coach had been without a club since his short tenure with Nottingham Forest came to an unexpected conclusion last October.

Postecoglou, 60, was dismissed just 39 days into his time at the City Ground after failing to secure a single win in eight matches across all competitions.

Before taking charge at Forest, Postecoglou had also been relieved of his duties at Tottenham Hotspur, despite guiding the North London club to a Europa League triumph in 2025 — their first piece of silverware in 17 years.

Following his departure from Forest, the former Australia national team boss became a familiar presence on ITV's World Cup broadcast team, where he served as one of the regular studio analysts.

Postecoglou’s name had been linked with several managerial vacancies, including the Scotland national team post after Steve Clarke’s resignation. He was also reportedly on the shortlist for the Kazakhstan national team role, though reports indicated that his wage expectations exceeded the federation’s budget for the 111th-ranked side.

However, the experienced tactician has now secured a new challenge, having been appointed as the head coach of Saudi Pro League champions Al-Nassr on a two-year deal.

He takes over from Jorge Jesus, who parted ways with Al-Nassr after his contract expired at the end of last season, despite leading the team to a long-awaited league title.

Several of Postecoglou’s new players are currently participating in the World Cup knockout rounds, including Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Joao Felix, who have advanced to the round of 16.

In total, Al-Nassr had nine players representing their countries at this summer’s tournament, featuring stars such as Senegal forward Sadio Mane and multiple members of the Saudi Arabian national team.

Spanning over three decades, Postecoglou’s managerial career has taken him across Greece, his country of birth, as well as Australia and Japan. His most accomplished spell came at Celtic, where he captured five trophies, including two Scottish Premiership titles and a domestic treble during his two-year tenure in Glasgow.
