Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MLA Anita Radhakrishnan has been arrested by the state police for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. To arrest Anita Radhakrishnan, Thoothukudi police reached her residence and arrested her on Friday.
Anita Radhakrishnan is the MLA from Tiruchendur assembly constituency and is also the DMK’s Thoothukudi South district secretary. On June 20, at a public meeting of DMK in Athoor, he had given controversial statements against Chief Minister Vijay. Since then he was on the police radar.
Why were you arrested?
TVK worker S. Based on Selvam’s complaint, the Athoor police had registered a case against him on June 23. Police have booked them under sections 352 (insults intended to provoke breach of peace) and 353(2) (statements promoting enmity between groups) of the Indian Judicial Code.
Why were you arrested?
Anita Radhakrishnan had made some objectionable comments about the relationship between Vijay and film actress Trisha Krishnan. Questions were also raised on his decision to enter politics from cinema.
Even the High Court did not grant anticipatory bail
Soon after his anticipatory bail plea was rejected in the Madras High Court today, the police arrested him while checking records at the Athoor Town Panchayat. High Court Justice GK Ilanthiraiyan read the transcript of his speech and expressed displeasure that a former minister and sitting MLA should respect the post of Chief Minister.
What are DMK workers saying?
DMK workers demonstrated outside the Thoothukudi SP office after the arrest. In Athoor, some workers blocked the road and raised slogans against the police. DMK says that the work is being done against DMK in the spirit of political rivalry, while the complainants are saying that his statements were objectionable and could increase enmity between the two communities.
