Health Desk: After the age of 40, many natural changes begin in the body of men. During this period, muscle strength may gradually decrease, metabolism may slow down and the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and joint problems increases. In such a situation, if some important changes are made in lifestyle in time, then one can remain healthy and active for a long time.
1. Do exercise and strength training daily
Decrease in muscle density is a normal process as we age. Therefore, it is recommended to do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity a week and strength training two days a week. Brisk walking, cycling, yoga, exercise with light weights and stretching can help in keeping the body strong.
2. Increase protein and nutritious food
After 40, just filling the stomach is not enough, but it is also important to provide proper nutrition to the body. Include pulses, milk, curd, eggs, fish, soya, green vegetables, seasonal fruits and whole grains in your diet. Limit fried, sweet and highly processed foods. Drinking enough water is equally important.
3. Get regular health checkups done
Many serious diseases can progress without any obvious symptoms in the initial stages. Therefore, after 40 years, important tests like blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, liver and kidney function should be done at least once a year. If there is a family history of heart disease or diabetes, additional tests may be done as per the doctor’s advice.
4. Good sleep and stress control
A good 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night is considered important for body repair and mental health. Constant stress can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and mental problems. Meditation, yoga, deep breathing exercises, and spending time with family can be helpful in reducing stress.
5. Stay away from smoking and alcohol
If you smoke, quitting can be the biggest positive step you can take for health. Tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption can have negative effects on the heart, lungs and liver. By keeping distance from them, the risk of many serious diseases can be reduced.
