Just like a fairy tale country! But that fairy tale is not a happy one, but a tragic one. A village hidden in the hills of Assam, its name is Jatinga. This small town in Northeast India becomes unworldly at certain times of the year. In the land of clouds, flocks of birds suddenly fell into the arms of death. Everyone was surprised to see the suicide of the birds. Tourists from home and abroad flock to Jatinga every year to see this strange phenomenon of mystery and thrill.

In this village of Dima Hasao district, an amazing scene can be seen mainly by the months of September and October. About 44 species of local birds such as buck, masranga, kali buck fly from the north when the sun sets. Then they hit a house or a tree at high speed with some unknown attraction. A strange tension between science and faith runs in this valley. Some of the locals think that this incident is due to the curse of an evil spirit. But according to ornithologists, it is not the migrants who lose their nests due to floods at the end of monsoon, but the local birds become disorientated. Confused by the bright lights of the village in the darkness of the night, they rush right in. But it dies by hitting a tree or a wall. Many have also raised the theory of geomagnetic or atmospheric changes in the mountainous region behind it. Whatever the reason, this season is like a festival of death across Jatinga.

How to go to this land of mystery?

Jatinga is about 330 km from the capital Guwahati. But the best advantage is if Assam’s only rock town Haflong remains. Jatinga is only 9 km from Haflong. From there you can easily reach by auto rickshaw to see this bird death fair. Again, it is possible to reach Jatinga directly by taking a bus bound for Silchar.
