Two Dwayne Johnson-led blockbusters are climbing streaming charts ahead of a major franchise shift. The films’ resurgence comes as the actor prepares to reprise his iconic role in a brand-new format.
Moana and Moana 2 reemerge on streaming ahead of live-action remake’s release
Disney’s Moana and Moana 2 have resurfaced on streaming charts in the United States ahead of the live-action remake. According to FlixPatrol data from July 1, 2026, Moana appeared at No. 7 on Disney+’s overall top 10. Moana 2 also charted at No. 8 on the same platform’s rankings.
This renewed streaming interest coincides with Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation, set for July 10, 2026. The remake stars newcomer Catherine Laga’aia as Moana alongside Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as Maui. Meanwhile, Thomas Kail directs the film, which Disney originally scheduled for June 2025 before delaying it.
As a result, the original 2016 animated film continues to hold remarkable streaming records across multiple years. Notably, Nielsen reported Moana accumulated 37.7 billion minutes of watch time between 2020 and 2025. The Wall Street Journal consequently described it as the No. 1 movie in streaming history based on those figures.
Similarly, Moana 2 performed strongly on streaming platforms after its Disney+ debut following a November 2024 theatrical release. In particular, Nielsen reported the sequel accumulated 9.43 billion minutes of watch time in 2025 alone. Additionally, Disney confirmed it was the platform’s most-watched film that year with over 80 million views.
Beyond Johnson, the live-action remake also features several new cast members. John Tui plays Chief Tui, Frankie Adams portrays Sina, and Rena Owen takes on Gramma Tala. However, Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced animated Moana, serves as executive producer but does not reprise the titular role. Furthermore, the animated sequel grossed $1.059 billion worldwide, far surpassing the original’s $687.2 million theatrical run.
