Despite various efforts to curb it, fake notes still manage to find their way into people's pockets. Amidst this, the RBI (Reserve Bank of India) has explained how to distinguish between genuine and fake notes. If you have a 500-rupee note, you should check it immediately.

RBI explains the difference between genuine and fake notes

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) prioritizes the well-being of its customers and frequently raises awareness through social media. Recently, the RBI shared a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) account highlighting a specific feature that identifies a genuine 500-rupee note.

The post includes an image of a 500-rupee note, featuring a magnified view of a specific area where the words 'INDIA' and 'Bharat' are written in a line. The image illustrates how to differentiate between a fake and a genuine note. View the post here:

'Microlettering' is the key feature

The caption accompanying the post reads: "Incidents of counterfeit notes are on the rise. Knowing even the smallest security features of a note can save you from significant financial loss. Learn about one such special security feature found on the 500-rupee note: 'Microlettering'."

In this post, the RBI highlights that micro-lettering is a key feature of the banknote, serving to distinguish between genuine and counterfeit notes.

It further notes the following:

The micro-letters 'Bharat' and 'INDIA' appear on the fold of Mahatma Gandhi's shawl.
The micro-letters 'RBI' appear on the frame of Mahatma Gandhi's spectacles.
The micro-letters 'RBI500INDIA' appear on the left side of the banknote.
The RBI also mentions in the post that one can visit the RBI website for verification or to make inquiries regarding the banknote. If you come across a note and find it difficult to determine whether it is genuine or counterfeit, you can use this RBI-specified technique to verify it.
