Carlo Ancelotti has shed light on why Neymar did not make an appearance during Brazil’s dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Japan in the World Cup. Despite the Santos forward warming up to the delight of the crowd in Houston, he was instructed to return to the bench as the match reached its tense conclusion.
Ancelotti’s original plan to bring Neymar on
During Brazil’s struggle to break down a determined Japanese defence in their World Cup second-round encounter, fans eagerly anticipated Neymar’s entrance. The 34-year-old spent much of the second half preparing on the sidelines, prompting expectations that his substitution was moments away. However, Ancelotti decided against introducing his star player, a choice he clarified immediately after the match.
Speaking to reporters, the Italian tactician explained that there had been a specific plan for Neymar’s involvement. “We were waiting for Neymar for extra time. I spoke with him; he was supposed to come in around the 60th or 65th minute. We equalised, and I didn’t want to disrupt the balance because the team had control of the game,” Ancelotti said post-match.
Comeback drama unfolds in Houston
Brazil found themselves in trouble after a subdued first half left them trailing the Samurai Blue. Japan’s well-organised structure and quick counterattacks created further pressure on Ancelotti to make adjustments. The breakthrough finally came in the 56th minute when Casemiro levelled the score, swinging momentum back in Brazil’s favour.
Choosing to keep Neymar on the bench ultimately proved to be the right call. While the crowd continued to chant for their icon, it was substitute Gabriel Martinelli who emerged as the hero, netting the decisive goal in the 96th minute to complete the comeback and spare Brazil from extra time.
Ancelotti commends Brazil’s squad depth
Though the victory was hard-fought, Ancelotti was full of praise for the balance and depth within his team. He pointed out that the range of talent available allowed Brazil to handle the intense knockout fixture against a Japanese side that has consistently exceeded expectations on the world stage. The result reinforced Brazil’s position as one of the tournament favourites.
Following the match, Ancelotti remarked, “We have many options, both on the bench and on the field. Japan are not an easy opponent. They’re well-organised and play with great intensity. It’s very significant that we deserved this win.”
Focus shifts to the round of 16
With Japan’s elimination confirmed, Brazil now turn their focus to the upcoming round of 16 clash in New Jersey on Sunday. The win secured their progress, with a meeting against either Norway or Ivory Coast on the horizon. As the Selecao continue their pursuit of the title, Neymar’s fitness and potential involvement will remain a key topic of discussion.
