The Miami Heat have officially declined the $2.41 million team option on guard Jahmir Young’s contract for the 2026-27 NBA season, making the 25-year-old an unrestricted free agent.
Young earned a standard NBA contract with Miami late last season after an outstanding campaign with the Sioux Falls Skyforce, the Heat’s G League affiliate. He was named to the All-NBA G League Second Team after averaging 25.9 points, 8.5 assists, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game, establishing himself as one of the league’s top performers.
Although Young dominated at the G League level, his NBA opportunities were limited. Over the past two seasons with the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat, he appeared in 20 NBA games, primarily in a reserve role as he worked to earn consistent minutes.
The decision is viewed as a roster management move by Miami rather than a reflection of Young’s potential. By declining the option before the June 29 deadline, the Heat gain additional salary-cap and roster flexibility heading into free agency.
Despite becoming a free agent, Young is expected to draw interest from NBA teams seeking backcourt depth. His scoring ability, playmaking skills, and impressive G League résumé make him an intriguing option for franchises looking to add a young guard with upside.
As NBA free agency gets underway, Young will now have the opportunity to explore offers across the league and compete for a larger role with his next team.
