Fan Detained by NCIS After Breaching Security and Entering NASCAR Coronado Track

During the second red flag of the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series United Rentals Driven to Serve 250, an over-enthusiastic fan managed to climb over two perimeter fences and step onto the track to speak with driver Sheldon Creed on Saturday afternoon.

The incident quickly escalated as federal officers apprehended the individual for trespassing at what is arguably the most ill-advised venue for such behaviour, given that the Coronado circuit operates within an active military installation.

Creed immediately informed his team about the encounter through his radio, suggesting that the fan appeared to be intoxicated.

“I think he’s drunk. I couldn’t even make out what he was saying,” Creed reported over the radio.

Jonathon Toney, responding on the team channel, clarified, “I’ve told the officials that we have nothing to do with this person.”

Creed later added, “They’re chasing him down right now.”

CW Sports cameras captured the fan climbing back over the same two fences while wearing flip-flops, returning to the spectator area and exchanging fist bumps with nearby fans before being restrained. Moments later, he was seen handcuffed beside an unmarked police SUV and taken into custody by NCIS agents.

This is not the first time a fan has attempted such a stunt. Back in 2007, a spectator at Watkins Glen walked onto the racetrack to request an autograph from Matt Kenseth. Similarly, in 2014, another fan climbed the catch fence at Richmond Raceway, reportedly out of boredom as Brad Keselowski dominated the event by leading every lap.
