Barcelona have reportedly opened discussions with Harry Kane’s representatives to gauge the possibility of signing the England captain after the 2026 World Cup, according to the Daily Mail.
The Catalan club have conveyed their interest but agreed to revisit the matter once Kane’s international duties are completed.
By that point, the Bayern Munich forward will have just one year left on his current contract, prompting Barcelona to evaluate whether they have the financial capacity to pursue what could become one of the summer’s blockbuster transfers.
Kane is currently very content in Munich, and Bayern are not entertaining any offers for their star striker. His representatives swiftly dismissed Barcelona’s initial approach.
Instead, they are said to be more focused on negotiating a new contract with the Bundesliga champions once the World Cup concludes.
At present, Kane’s full attention is on England’s campaign in the World Cup. Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern side are set to face DR Congo in the round of 32 on Wednesday.
The 32-year-old netted three goals in the group stage, following an incredible 61-goal tally in 51 matches for Bayern last season.
Barcelona, who are in need of a new leading striker after Robert Lewandowski’s exit, are prepared to intensify their pursuit of Kane if there are signs that a deal could be feasible.
Kane has further strengthened his reputation as one of modern football’s elite forwards, having scored 70 goals across all competitions for club and country this season.
Only Lionel Messi’s legendary 2011/12 season has seen a higher goal count among players in Europe’s top five leagues in the 21st century.
Kane has also achieved a milestone by becoming England’s all-time top World Cup scorer with 11 goals.
Even if Barcelona return with stronger intent next summer, persuading Bayern to part ways with Kane will present a formidable challenge.
The German champions consider him a vital part of their long-term project and are unlikely to engage in transfer discussions, particularly after witnessing how he revolutionised their attacking play.
If Barcelona thought Atletico Madrid were difficult negotiating partners when they held firm to keep Julian Alvarez, Bayern are expected to be even more resolute. Convincing them to sell Kane could prove nearly impossible.
