Friends, yesterday was a very special day for Rahul Gandhi, because Congress leader and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi completed two years on this post on Friday. On this occasion, Gandhi shared a message on social media and said that his commitment towards raising the voice of the people and protecting constitutional values is unwavering.
Two years as opposition leader: Rahul Gandhi’s reaction
Rahul Gandhi wrote that his main objective in the last two years has been to ensure that the concerns and hopes of every Indian reach those in power.
He said, “Today I am completing two years as the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha. My only mission in these two years has been to take the voice of every Indian to those in power.”
Referring to important issues raised in Parliament and outside, Gandhi said he stood with the people during the NEET controversy, raised his voice against alleged vote theft and consistently defended the Constitution.
He further said, “From the streets to the Parliament, your trust is my biggest strength. The journey is long, but the resolve is the same—I will keep fighting every battle for you. Jai Hind, Jai Constitution.”
Became the leader of the opposition after the historic comeback of Congress.
Rahul Gandhi took over as the Leader of the Opposition on June 26, 2024, following the better performance of the Congress Party in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The post remained vacant for almost a decade (from 2014 to 2024), as no opposition party got at least 10% of the Lok Sabha seats required for official recognition of the post.
The Congress crossed this mark in the 2024 general elections by winning 100 seats—much more than the 52 seats it won in 2019—paving the way for Rahul Gandhi to become the leader of the opposition.
Representation of Rae Bareli in 18th Lok Sabha
Rahul Gandhi is currently representing Rae Bareli in the 18th Lok Sabha. In the 2024 elections, he won both Rae Bareli and Wayanad seats, but later decided to retain the Rae Bareli seat.
After leaving the Wayanad seat, his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra contested the by-election and won from that seat.
Importance of the post of Leader of the Opposition (LoP)
The Leader of the Opposition has legal recognition under the ‘Salaries and Allowances of Leaders of the Opposition in Parliament Act, 1977’. This post gets salary, allowances and facilities equal to that of a Cabinet Minister.
Since assuming this role, Rahul Gandhi has been one of the most vocal voices of the opposition in Parliament. They have often challenged the ruling government on issues ranging from governance and elections to education and constitutional matters.
