The €60m Nico Paz domino: How Real Madrid’s bold plan could pave the way for Jose Mourinho to land Inter star Alessandro Bastoni

Real Madrid are reportedly crafting a bold transfer strategy that could see their former academy prospect, Nico Paz, play a pivotal role in securing Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni for Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese manager, keen to reinforce his defensive options at the Santiago Bernabeu, may find the solution through a complex sequence of negotiations centred around the Argentine midfielder.

Real Madrid’s calculated Nico Paz strategy

The Spanish giants are currently assessing their next move regarding Paz, whose impressive performances in Serie A have caught the attention of top European clubs. According to reports, Real Madrid are prepared to activate a €9 million buy-back clause to bring the young midfielder back from Como. However, instead of reintegrating him into the first team, Los Blancos plan to offer the Italian club the opportunity to retain him on a permanent deal worth an astounding €60 million.

Although such a fee would likely exceed Como’s financial capabilities despite their affluent ownership, Inter Milan have reportedly emerged as serious contenders for Paz’s signature, as per AS. This development could provide Real Madrid with an opening to satisfy Mourinho’s wish for a world-class centre-back by bringing Bastoni into the negotiation process.

Mourinho’s defensive mission

Mourinho has long been seeking a commanding central defender to anchor his backline. A potential move for Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck has been ruled out following his recent injury, while Manchester City’s Ruben Dias remains completely off the market. Consequently, Bastoni has surfaced as the most viable elite option, even though Barcelona also showed interest before being deterred by Inter’s €70 million valuation. The Italian international remains a key target for Mourinho, who envisions pairing him with Ibrahima Konate in a formidable defensive partnership.

Reports suggest that Inter are open to discussing a sale around the €70 million mark, particularly as Bastoni has faced criticism from sections of the San Siro faithful over the past season. Should Inter’s hierarchy be eager to secure Paz, they might be compelled to ease their stance on Bastoni’s price, paving the way for a mutually beneficial deal in what has become a tactical transfer standoff.

The FIFA ‘bridge transfer’ obstacle

Despite the ingenuity of the plan, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez must tread carefully within FIFA’s strict transfer framework. According to Article 5bis of FIFA’s Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, any two consecutive transfers of the same player within 16 weeks are presumed to constitute a ‘bridge transfer’ unless proven otherwise. The rule explicitly prohibits clubs or players from engaging in such arrangements. As a result, any ‘buy and immediate resell’ operation involving Paz could face regulatory challenges this summer.

To avoid breaching FIFA’s rules, Madrid may need to delay the transaction until the winter transfer window or explore an alternative such as a loan move with a mandatory purchase clause. The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has historically taken a strict stance on these matters, and any violation could result in sanctions for those involved, potentially derailing Mourinho’s efforts to have his revamped defence ready for the start of the upcoming season.

Paz’s perspective and Mourinho’s midfield dilemma

For Nico Paz, the situation presents a defining moment in his career following a breakout campaign in Italy, where he recorded 13 goals and eight assists under the management of Cesc Fabregas. While the youngster enjoys star status in Serie A, Mourinho currently boasts a stacked midfield at Real Madrid featuring the likes of Jude Bellingham and Bernardo Silva. Reports suggest that Mourinho has already spoken to Paz but was unable to guarantee the consistent game time the 21-year-old needs for his continued development.

With Paz focused on guiding Como towards Champions League qualification and maintaining his place in Argentina’s national setup, he may opt for stability. Nevertheless, the allure of a move to a club like Inter Milan—or even a return to Real Madrid as part of a larger transfer strategy—keeps his future uncertain as all parties finalise their plans for the summer window.
