'Not enough' – Andy Robertson and Steve Clarke concede Scotland’s World Cup journey ends after humbling 3-0 loss to Brazil leaves Tartan Army stranded in group stage

Steve Clarke has acknowledged that Scotland are “probably heading home” after suffering a demoralising 3-0 defeat to Brazil in their final group stage fixture of the World Cup. The Tartan Army were outplayed by Carlo Ancelotti’s men in Miami, leaving their hopes of qualifying for the knockout phase for the first time in history hanging by the slimmest of margins.

Clarke concedes World Cup dream is over

Clarke was brutally honest in his evaluation of Scotland’s situation following the heavy loss in Group C. Defensive lapses were ruthlessly punished by the Selecao, as Vinicius Junior struck twice and Matheus Cunha added another to ensure top position for the South American giants. The outcome leaves Scotland sitting third with three points and a damaging goal difference.

Speaking after the match, a visibly disappointed Clarke remarked: “When you give a team like Brazil the sort of opportunities we gave them, you can expect to be punished. That’s exactly what happened. I think we’re probably going home. We knew how dangerous they are in the final third, and we handed them the first two goals, maybe even the third. So we gifted them the goals, but they also missed a few chances, and Angus [Gunn] had to make some good saves. We created one or two openings, but nothing truly clear-cut.”

Robertson’s downbeat verdict

Captain Andy Robertson shared a similarly bleak outlook on Scotland’s chances of progressing as one of the best third-placed teams. Although they managed a 1-0 victory over Haiti earlier in the group, the heavy defeat against Brazil has severely dented their goal difference, leaving them in a state of uncertainty at this World Cup, according to sources close to the squad.

“I don’t think it’s enough,” said the skipper. “I don’t think we’ve done enough. Time will tell. Maybe we’ll be proven wrong, maybe there’s another chance. The next couple of days will be horrible, and long. This is the position we’ve put ourselves in, and we have to live with it.”

Technical gap evident against world-class opposition

The result underscored the gulf in class between the two sides. Scotland fought hard but lacked the creative flair to unlock a disciplined Brazilian defence. John McGinn remains the only Scottish player to score in the tournament so far, netting against Haiti, while the team failed to offer much attacking threat against either Morocco or Brazil.

Clarke admitted his disappointment for the players but stressed the importance of learning from the experience: “I’m disappointed for them because they didn’t reach the levels they’re capable of. We all know that. Anyone who’s followed this team over the last few years knows we didn’t perform at our best. When you see the physicality, power, and technique of sides like Morocco and Brazil, it’s clear we have work to do. We must get better at developing young players who can compete on the world stage.”

A long wait in American limbo

With qualification now out of their control, the Tartan Army must wait for other group outcomes to determine their fate. Statistically, their chances of advancing dropped sharply following results elsewhere, leaving supporters in the United States wondering whether their World Cup journey has come to an early end.

When asked if he had a message for the fans in the US, Clarke replied: “I’m not sure that’s part of my job as head coach. The fans have been fantastic, absolutely brilliant. And remember, it’s this group of players who brought these fans to America — they’re the ones who qualified. That’s why the Scottish media are here. Otherwise, we’d be sitting at home watching the World Cup without Scotland. The fans appreciate what this group has done for them. They’ve had a wonderful time and represented the country proudly, but they wouldn’t be here without these players, and that’s something very important to remember.”
