Tamil Nadu News: Governments often implement various schemes aimed at providing financial assistance to the public. Gold holds great significance in South India—particularly in Tamil Nadu—where women prefer wearing it in their daily lives. Against this backdrop, the Tamil Nadu government is launching a unique initiative designed to link social welfare with the state's cultural traditions. Under this scheme, every newborn delivered in a government hospital will receive a one-gram gold ring.

Learn about the scheme

The initiative is named the 'Thai Maman Gold Ring Scheme'. Notably, it has received formal government approval, with an annual budget of approximately ₹755.83 crore allocated for it. Officials have also been instructed to initiate the tender process and implement the scheme without delay.

What is the objective of the scheme?

The government states that the scheme aims to support newborns and their families while also promoting Tamil cultural heritage. While various political parties in Tamil Nadu have previously gifted gold rings to babies born in government hospitals on their leaders' birthdays, the government claims this is the first time such a tradition is being officially incorporated into a state welfare scheme.

Which children will benefit from the scheme?

The scheme will benefit children born in government hospitals on or after June 22, 2026.
The scheme is set to launch on September 15, 2026.

Government's decision comes at this juncture

The government is preparing to provide gold rings to newborns immediately after birth. It is worth noting that this decision has been taken at a time when gold prices are witnessing continuous fluctuations. This initiative by the Tamil Nadu government has now become a topic of discussion among the public.
