Alexander Isak delivered a commanding performance in Sweden's 5-1 victory over Tunisia, scoring once and providing two assists in a display that underscored his importance to the national team.
Yasin Ayari opened the scoring before Isak doubled Sweden's lead, cutting through the Tunisian defence and slotting home from just outside the area. Tunisia responded through Omar Rekik before the interval, but Sweden regained control in the second half. Isak's high press forced a turnover, and he set up Viktor Gyokeres for the third goal. He later provided a deft flick from a set-piece for Mattias Svanberg to convert, before Ayari added his second to complete the scoring.
Isak Shows Sharpness After Liverpool Frustration
For Liverpool followers, the performance offered reassurance. Isak managed only four league goals for the Merseyside club last season, a return better explained by irregular minutes than by any shortcoming in ability. He featured 22 times but started only 13 of those, rarely enjoying a sustained run in the starting XI.
His international form tells a different story. He has now netted twice across his last three outings for Sweden, including a friendly strike against Norway, and his showing against Tunisia suggested a striker rediscovering his sharpness and confidence.
Fitness Concern Before the Netherlands Clash
Sweden's next fixture is a Saturday meeting with the Netherlands—a contest that could see Isak face his Anfield colleagues Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch.
Whether he features, however, is now less certain. Reports on Wednesday indicated that Isak trained individually, following a separate programme just 72 hours before the Group F encounter.
"One player is training individually, and that's Alexander Isak. He is following an individual program as part of extra recovery after the match," said national team press officer Petra Thorén. "He will be out on the field some of the time and the rest in the gym."
The language points more toward caution than serious concern, yet it remains a development worth monitoring. Isak stayed on until the 90th minute against Tunisia—the first time he had completed a full match since October, when he featured for Sweden against Kosovo.
Liverpool Interest Goes Beyond Goals
From Liverpool's perspective, Isak's World Cup displays offer insight into both his physical condition and his mentality. The goal and two assists were welcome, but his movement off the ball, pressing intensity, and general sharpness may carry even greater significance.
Sweden will hope this is merely a precaution. Liverpool will share that hope. For Isak, the looming clash with the Netherlands now represents a further test—one that will examine not just his form, but his body and resilience as well.
