The BBC has announced its full line-up of commentators, pundits and presenters for Argentina’s 2026 World Cup encounter with Austria.
The reigning world champions kicked off their title defence in style with a 3-0 victory over Algeria in their Group J opener in Kansas, powered by a Lionel Messi hat-trick.
Argentina’s captain now needs just one more goal to become the all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup history, having drawn level with Germany legend Miroslav Klose on 16 goals. Messi will be eager to surpass that milestone when they face Austria, who also claimed three points in their first fixture after a 3-1 win against Jordan.
The Group J match will kick off at 6pm (BST), with the winner sealing a place in the last 32. The action will be broadcast live on the BBC.
Gabby Logan will anchor the BBC’s coverage of this crucial fixture. A familiar face to football fans across the UK, Logan began her broadcasting career with Sky Sports three decades ago and has since become one of the BBC’s most respected presenters.
She will be joined in the studio by a trio of former international players, including one who knows plenty about scoring goals — ex-France striker Olivier Giroud. The 39-year-old, who only recently lost his status as France’s all-time top scorer, has featured regularly in the BBC’s World Cup coverage this year and will undoubtedly keep an eye on Messi’s pursuit of history.
Also on the panel will be former Spain and Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta, who represented Spain in three World Cups and five major international tournaments over his 11 seasons at Stamford Bridge. His experience at the highest level adds valuable insight to the discussion.
Completing the punditry team is former Wales captain Ashley Williams, who famously led his nation to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 and is now a regular face on BBC’s football programming.
Providing live commentary for the match on BBC One will be experienced broadcaster Steve Bower, who has been part of the BBC’s World Cup team since 2010. He will be joined on commentary duty by co-commentator Danny Murphy, the former Liverpool and Fulham midfielder. Murphy, who features regularly on Match of the Day during the domestic season, brings a wealth of tactical knowledge and on-field experience to the broadcast.
Together, the team of Logan, Giroud, Azpilicueta, Williams, Bower, and Murphy ensures that viewers will receive top-quality coverage and analysis as Argentina and Austria battle for a place in the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup.
