Leeds United submit first bid for Southampton midfielder Shea Charles amid Manchester United interest

Leeds United have reportedly tabled an initial offer to sign Southampton midfielder Shea Charles, who has also drawn attention from Manchester United.

Manchester United are concentrating on strengthening their midfield this summer, and Charles is understood to be among the players under close observation by the club.

Michael Carrick’s side are expected to secure up to three midfield reinforcements. The Red Devils have already reached an agreement with Atalanta for Ederson, who recently confirmed that his move to Old Trafford is almost complete.

Talks with West Ham regarding Mateus Fernandes are still ongoing, but United continue to explore multiple midfield options. Aurélien Tchouaméni, Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, and Carlos Baleba are all being considered, while Charles, along with Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney, is seen as a more economical alternative.

Charles made headlines earlier this season when he scored the decisive goal that knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup. He later netted a crucial winner against Middlesbrough in the Championship play-off semi-finals, although its significance was overshadowed by the subsequent spygate controversy surrounding Southampton.

According to a report covered by The Peoples Person last week, Leeds were preparing a £20 million proposal for Charles in an effort to move ahead of other interested clubs, including Manchester United.

Simon Jones from the Daily Mail has now confirmed that the Yorkshire club has officially submitted the offer.

Jones stated, “Leeds have made a £20m-plus offer to Southampton for Shea Charles.”

This has been backed up by TEAMtalk, which also reports that Southampton have already identified a potential replacement for the midfielder targeted by United.

Sources indicate that Leeds and Southampton are currently in discussions to finalise an agreement. Adding to Manchester United’s concerns, the report also claims that Charles is open to a move to Elland Road.

The 22-year-old is eager to play in the Premier League and views the chance to join Leeds as an exciting step forward in his career.

Leeds’ interest in the former Manchester City academy graduate dates back roughly 18 months. His adaptability is particularly valued at Elland Road, as he can operate not only as a central midfielder but also at full-back or in wider positions.

If Manchester United decide to intensify their pursuit of Charles, it will be interesting to see whether they choose to enter into a bidding battle to gain an advantage over their longstanding rivals.
