Jose Mourinho given exceptional transfer authority at Real Madrid as he ‘builds a team to win immediately’ amid pursuits of Enzo Fernandez and Ruben Dias

Jose Mourinho has been granted remarkable control over Real Madrid’s transfer operations, marking a rare shift in policy at the Santiago Bernabeu. The esteemed manager is driving a bold new direction, focusing on instant triumph rather than long-term development, with elite names such as Enzo Fernandez and Ruben Dias reportedly on his radar.

The Santo Mauro meeting signals a change in power

On Tuesday, June 9, just days prior to the start of the 2026 World Cup, a crucial meeting took place at Madrid’s Hotel Santo Mauro, heralding a fresh chapter for Los Blancos. Mourinho met with director general Jose Angel Sanchez, chief scout Juni Calafat, and renowned agent Jorge Mendes to plan a major summer rebuild.

According to ESPN, unlike former managers such as Carlo Ancelotti, whose transfer wishes were often overlooked, the “Special One” now appears to have become the central decision-maker in the club’s recruitment strategy.

This transformation is reflected in the statistics. In 2025, Real Madrid’s new signings averaged 21 years of age. This summer, however, with the additions of Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, and Ibrahima Konate — and Denzel Dumfries expected soon — that average has risen to nearly 29.

Mourinho’s aim is not to build for tomorrow but to assemble a squad ready to conquer immediately, preferring seasoned professionals over untested prospects.

Cucurella and Silva headline the experienced arrivals

The swift €55 million signing of Cucurella from Chelsea underlines Mourinho’s growing influence. The Spanish full-back was reportedly convinced by Mourinho’s detailed understanding of his previous Champions League performances.

Bernardo Silva’s recruitment was similarly decisive. The Portuguese star, preparing to depart Manchester City on a free transfer, had significant interest from Atletico Madrid and Barcelona. Yet Mourinho insisted that Silva become a prime target for Real Madrid.

Following Mourinho’s push, Madrid acted quickly to secure the 31-year-old on a two-year deal. Silva is expected to bring a winning mentality and much-needed leadership to a midfield that Mourinho believes lacks “relentless energy, discipline, and a competitive spirit.”

Mourinho’s other transfer priorities

With Eder Militao struggling with injuries and Antonio Rudiger approaching his 33rd birthday, defensive reinforcement has become a top priority. Konate has arrived after his Liverpool contract expired, while Dumfries is poised to join from Inter Milan for €20 million as Dani Carvajal’s replacement.

The spending spree, however, may not end there. Real Madrid are still seeking an elite midfielder and an additional central defender. Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, who has openly expressed his desire to play in Madrid, is reported to be high on Mourinho’s shortlist.

At the same time, Manchester City’s Ruben Dias is being considered as a defensive cornerstone. West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes and Lille’s rising star Ayyoub Bouaddi are also being tracked as potential additions to strengthen the midfield.

Managing departures and the Vinicius Junior question

With Mourinho’s “win now” approach, some current players could be moved on. Reports suggest that Real Madrid may terminate Dani Ceballos’ contract a year early to make space for new arrivals. In the attacking department, club president Florentino Perez has been linked with a €150 million move for Julian Alvarez. However, the most pressing concern remains the future of Vinicius Junior, whose contract runs until 2027.

According to ESPN, the Brazilian forward is keen to stay, but extension talks have been paused until after the World Cup. Real Madrid now face a major decision: either meet the 25-year-old’s wage demands or consider a substantial sale this summer to prevent losing him for free later on.

In a club where coaches have historically adapted to what they’re given, Mourinho’s influence in deciding whether Vinicius remains central to the project represents a significant shift in power at the Bernabeu.
