In the second quarter alone, Vietnam’s largest island off the southern province of An Giang is expected to welcome 508,000 foreign tourists, up 24% year-on-year, according to a report from the province’s Department of Tourism.
Industry insiders said Phu Quoc’s growth stems from several factors, including visa exemption policies for international tourists, increasingly improved transportation infrastructure, and the emergence of large-scale tourism, resort, and entertainment complexes, which contribute to extending the length of stay and increasing tourist spending.
Thanks to its diverse range of tourism products, Phu Quoc has become an attractive destination for international tourists, especially from South Korea, Taiwan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, India, and many Southeast Asian countries.
Associate Professor Tran Dinh Thien, former director of the Vietnam Institute of Economics, said Phu Quoc is entering a phase of rapid growth, driven by the involvement of major corporations investing in and developing key infrastructure and tourism projects.
This would help elevate tourism competitiveness of the pearl island, Thien added.
So far this year the island recorded tourism revenue of VND26.9 trillion (US$1 billion), up 50.4% year-on-year and meeting 60% of this year’s target.
The island’s tourism industry generated VND44 trillion in 2025.
Phu Quoc will be turned into a world-class destination for tourism and high-end services as it prepares to host the APEC summit in 2027, according to An Giang Province’s master plan for 2021-2030.
