Lucas Bergvall has reportedly told Tottenham Hotspur that he intends to leave the club this summer, placing the Premier League side in a difficult position as several domestic and European clubs monitor his situation closely. The Swedish midfielder, currently representing his nation at the 2026 World Cup, is said to be keen on a new challenge after slipping down the pecking order under manager Roberto De Zerbi.
Although Bergvall remains under contract until June 2031, the 20-year-old has made it clear to the Tottenham hierarchy that he views his long-term future away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, according to reports from The Athletic. The youngster’s decision comes amid growing interest from Premier League sides including Chelsea and Aston Villa, both of whom have previously approached Spurs to discuss his availability.
Since arriving from Djurgarden in 2024, Bergvall’s time in North London has been a mix of highs and lows. He enjoyed a brilliant first season under Ange Postecoglou, playing a central role in Tottenham’s 2025 Europa League triumph — the club’s first trophy in 17 years. His outstanding performances earned him the club’s Player of the Year award and appeared to establish him as a key figure for the future.
However, his progress has been hindered by a series of managerial changes. Thomas Frank, who succeeded Postecoglou, used Bergvall in wider positions rather than his preferred central midfield role. This pattern continued under Igor Tudor and has become even more pronounced following De Zerbi’s appointment in March. The Italian’s 4-2-3-1 formation has not suited Bergvall’s natural strengths, leaving him on the fringes during the final stretch of the 2025-26 Premier League campaign.
With uncertainty surrounding his role, Tottenham’s rivals are closely watching developments. Both Aston Villa and Chelsea have maintained their interest, and Spurs may be forced to reconsider their stance if a sizeable offer arrives this summer. De Zerbi’s current squad plans — which include pursuits of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes — suggest the club is looking to add more experienced midfielders with proven Premier League pedigree. The lack of European competitions next season will also restrict rotation opportunities, further complicating Bergvall’s chances of regular playing time.
On the international front, Bergvall continues to impress despite his club struggles. He recently made history by becoming Sweden’s youngest-ever World Cup player, coming off the bench in the 5-1 victory over Tunisia and registering an assist that showcased his technical flair. Nevertheless, Sweden’s campaign remains uncertain after a heavy defeat to the Netherlands in their second group-stage match.
As the summer transfer window approaches, Tottenham face a crucial decision: retain one of Europe’s most promising young midfielders or allow him to seek a fresh start elsewhere. Either way, Bergvall’s future looks set to be one of the most closely watched stories in the coming weeks.
