Brazil have received an encouraging fitness update regarding Raphinha after the Barcelona winger underwent medical scans in the aftermath of the Selecao’s emphatic win over Haiti.

Favourable signs after medical assessments

Raphinha underwent clinical evaluations on Saturday morning to determine the extent of a right thigh injury sustained during Brazil’s commanding victory against Haiti on Friday. The forward sparked concern within the Brazilian camp when he was substituted during the first half after experiencing acute discomfort in his posterior muscle.

Although the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) is yet to publish an official medical report, early indications appear positive. As reported by Gazeta Esportiva, the expectation is that the Barcelona attacker will not be withdrawn from the national squad, a major source of relief for manager Carlo Ancelotti and Brazil supporters as the World Cup continues.

A recurring fitness issue under close scrutiny

The latest injury scare carries added significance due to Raphinha’s recent history of muscular problems. During the March international break, the 29-year-old had to pull out of the squad due to similar thigh concerns, following a challenging club season in which he suffered four separate injuries in the same area.

Despite the recurring issue, there were encouraging signs soon after his substitution against Haiti. The winger was seen walking unassisted as he left the pitch and began immediate treatment with the medical staff on the substitutes’ bench, raising optimism about a swift recovery.

Tournament rules and squad limitations

Raphinha’s fitness is crucial given FIFA’s stringent World Cup regulations. If he were to be ruled out for the rest of the tournament, Brazil would not be allowed to summon a replacement from outside their original 26-player list, as the deadline for squad changes expired 24 hours before their opening match against Morocco.

Once the first round of the group stage begins, national teams are prohibited from altering their squad lists for the remainder of the competition, except in the case of goalkeepers. This rule places considerable responsibility on Brazil’s medical team to ensure Raphinha’s recovery progresses well enough for him to contribute in the knockout stages.

Neymar preparing for return against Scotland

The Brazilian side engaged in recovery sessions on Saturday morning, divided between their hotel facilities and the gym at the Columbia Park training centre. After the morning activities, players were granted the afternoon off to rest and recuperate from their recent match workload.

Brazil now turn their attention to their final Group C fixture against Scotland, which is expected to mark Neymar’s return to action after missing the first two matches due to injury. Following the 3-0 victory over Haiti, Carlo Ancelotti provided a positive update on Neymar’s progress, saying: “Neymar will train individually tomorrow and join the full squad on Monday. He will be available for the match against Scotland.”
