Furious Real Madrid star Arda Guler reacted emotionally after Turkey’s World Cup journey came to an abrupt end following a 1-0 defeat against Paraguay.

The Real Madrid midfielder offered a heartfelt apology to fans, admitting that the team’s performance had fallen far short of expectations. Turkey’s exit was confirmed after they failed to score in either of their opening two matches.

Turkey’s World Cup run ends prematurely

Turkey’s World Cup campaign concluded earlier than anticipated after a 1-0 loss to Paraguay mathematically ended their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage. Under coach Vincenzo Montella, the team entered the tournament with strong expectations, buoyed by their impressive quarter-final finish at Euro 2024.

However, the Crescent-Stars endured a disastrous start. They suffered a surprising 2-0 defeat to Australia before falling narrowly to Paraguay. As a result, Turkey were left without a single point or goal after their first two fixtures.

Guler expresses regret to fans

Arda Guler was visibly distraught following the final whistle. The 21-year-old, considered one of the brightest talents of Turkey’s new generation alongside Kenan Yildiz, struggled to contain his disappointment as the team’s elimination was confirmed. Speaking to TRT Spor after the match, Guler did not hold back in evaluating Turkey’s shortcomings and issued a direct apology to supporters.

“We are ashamed. We apologise to all our people,” Guler said. “We play for very big clubs and must reflect that on the pitch. We could not score in two matches. Throughout my national team career, I will do everything I can to make our fans forget this tournament. We apologise to our people.”

Montella’s side undone by lack of finishing

The statistics behind Turkey’s early exit highlight their inefficiency in front of goal. Across their two defeats, they managed an astonishing 62 shots without a single goal. According to Opta, this marks the highest number of attempts without scoring over any two-match stretch in World Cup history dating back to 1966. Against Paraguay alone, Turkey dominated with 78.5 percent possession and 33 shots, yet failed to convert any of those chances.

Looking ahead to rebuilding

Although Turkey still have one remaining group-stage fixture against the United States, the result will have no bearing on their qualification prospects. The emphasis now shifts to finishing the tournament on a positive note and beginning the process of rebuilding team morale and confidence.
